Hello everyone! We’ve got two things for you this update.

First up are a few news articles that caught our attention while we’ve been preparing to read stories. We wanted to share them with you for research and inspiration.

Finally, we have submission guidelines for you! We don’t have a date yet for when we’ll be running the Kickstarter campaign, but several of you have asked for more details so you can get started writing. Check the box below for more information.

Thanks again for your support and encouragement! If you want to get ahold of us, give me a shout on Twitter, or send us an email.

Submission Guidelines

Pretty much what it says on the tin – space marine midwives. Bringing forth new life under (space) battle conditions. The juxtaposition of war and creation. Issues surrounding women’s access to medical care in times of political / military upheaval.

Crossing genres is fine – we’re open to horror, crime, humor and YA in our science fiction.

Things we’d love to see:

  • Midwives who aren’t women

  • Marines who aren’t men

  • Nonbinary, asexual and trans perspectives on pregnancy and childbirth

  • Bad ass older ladies

  • People with disabilities kicking butt in space

  • Intersectional feminism

  What we’re NOT looking for:

  • Use of the Games Workshop Warhammer 40k intellectual property. This is NOT a Games Workshop licensed anthology. We can’t and won’t use stories set in that universe. We’re using the term ‘space marine’ in a generic sense to mean ‘a member of the military in a science fiction setting’. GW has a long history of trademark defense we intend to avoid.
  • Snark. ‘Ha ha isn’t childbirth a wacky thing’ won’t fly here. Humor, yes. Denigration and devaluation, nope.
  • Gratuitous brutalization of women, transpersons, nonbinary people, people of color, people of size, or people with disabilities. We’re not interested in fridged characters.

  • Casual treatment, or gratuitous inclusion, of rape. We fully acknowledge that conception from sexual assault is a reality of war-time situations and authors may want to include those themes. We want respectful treatment of such situations, not graphic depictions or lazy plot devices.

Diversity & Inclusion

This is an inclusive, intersectional feminist book, open to all for submissions. We really, really, REALLY (have I mentioned really?) encourage authors of color and those who have faced barriers to publication in the past to submit. PLEASE share these guidelines widely, and encourage your fellow authors to consider participting.
